The nature and significance of oral interfacial events are discussed a
nd it is pointed out, for example, that the presence of thin adsorbed
salivary films probably explains why it is so comparatively difficult
to adhere things to healthy tooth surfaces in vivo. The nature of mode
rn adhesive restorative dentistry is then presented and a model descri
bed of saliva, salivary structures and salivary compositions from surf
