Jw. Sanders et al., Methylobacterium mesophilicum infection: Case report and literature reviewof an unusual opportunistic pathogen, CLIN INF D, 30(6), 2000, pp. 936-938
Methylobacterium mesophilicum is a methylotrophic, pink pigmented, gram-neg
ative rod that was initially isolated from environmental sources that is be
ing increasingly reported as a cause of opportunistic infections in immunoc
ompromised hosts. We present the case of an immunocompromised woman who dev
eloped a central catheter infection with M. mesophilicum and review the oth
er 29 cases reported in the literature, noting that it is frequently resist
ant to beta-lactam agents but is generally susceptible to aminoglycosides a
nd quinolones.
