Functionalization of the cluster [FeCp(mu(3)-CO)](4)

The 33-year-old cluster [FeCp(mu(3)-CO)](4) (1) has been functionalized by reaction with lithium diisopropylamide, followed by CO2, to give the acid R CO2H, 2 (R = Fe-4(mu-CO)(4)Cp-3(C5H4-)), recently reported by Rauchfuss. Th e cluster 2 reacts with (CO)(2)Cl-2 to give the new cluster RCOCl (3), whic h reacts with the disulfide {-S-(CH2)(11)NH3+Cl-}(2) to give the amido-clus ter disulfide [Fe-4(mu(3)-CO)(4)Cp{eta(5')-C5H4C(O)NH(CH2)(11)-S-}](2) (4), with NEt3 to give the diethylamido cluster [Fe4Cp3(eta(5)-C5H4CONEt2)(mu(3 )-CO)(4)] (5), and with N-hydroxysuccinimide to give the N-succinimidyl est er 6.
