Glass formation was investigated in the InF3-BaF2-SrF2-YF3 quaternary
system, Limits of glass-forming areas are given in pseudo-ternary syst
ems with different ratios of SrF2 and BaF2. The mean sample thickness
is 2-3 mm. Main physical properties, including characteristic temperat
ures, density and infrared transmission, have been measured and compar
ed with those of standard fluoride classes. Evidence for phase separat
ion was observed. This led to the discovery of yttrium-rich fluoride g
lasses, close to the YF3-BaF2 binary association. Glass formation in t
he InF3-PbF2-YF3 ternary system is also reported. Potential interest o
f these glasses for practical applications is discussed.
