Glass formation was investigated in the multicomponent system includin
g ZrF4, AIF(3), YF3, MgF2, CaF2, SrF2, BaF2, ZnF2, CdF2, PbF2 and NaF.
For simplification, all molar concentrations were set at 10, 15 and 2
0%, leading to numerous vitreous compositions based on quasi equimolar
associations of fluorides. Samples of several millimeters in thicknes
s were obtained. Because of the low concentration of hygroscopic fluor
ides it was expected that the chemical durability of these glasses wou
ld be higher than that of fluorozirconates.
