Sexual dysfunction is a well-known symptom of depression. However, it has r
eceived little, if any, attention from clinicians and researchers. A review
of published literature suggests that sexual dysfunction occurs in the maj
ority of depressed patients. II has a major impact on the quality of life o
f the patients. The pathophysiology of sexual dysfunction in depression inv
olves a complex interplay of various neurotransmitters and hormones. Clinic
ians need to be more proactive in enquiring about sexual dysfunction in dep
ressed patients. More information is needed about the nature, prevalence an
d pathophysiology of sexual dysfunction in depression. Copyright (C) 2000 J
