Various mechanical behaviours of Rohacell-51WF foam are studied in the pres
ent paper. Uniaxial tension and compression, and pure shear properties are
obtained using standard test techniques. A hydrostatic test rig was designe
d to conduct hydrostatic compressive tests on the foam. These material test
s give basic mechanical properties of the studied foam. Transverse shear ef
fects on the compressive behaviour of the foam are studied by developing a
shear-compression test technique. Deformation and failure features during f
oam crushing are discussed according to experimental evidence. (C) 2000 Els
