Synthesis of new coumarin-3-carboxylic acid amides and esters with pho
sphatidylethanolamine, cetylamine, cholesterol, and acetoxymethanol wa
s described. When interacting with hydroxyl radicals generated by chem
ical methods or by gamma-irradiation, these compounds formed intensely
fluorescent hydroxylation products and can be used for a site-specifi
c detection of hydroxyl radicals in biological systems.
