A simple and efficient process for the preparation of Y-87/Sr-87m generator
with adsorption chromatography on alpha-Fe2O3 was developed. A 0.25 g pall
et of natural SrCl2 was employed as a solid target which was irradiated at
INER TR30/15 cyclotron. After irradiation the target was dissolved into a s
aline solution and adjusted with HCl/NaOH to a pH of 6.3. This solution was
then passed directly through the column (1 cm empty set x4 cm), loaded wit
h appropriate amounts of alpha-Fe2O3, at a flowrate of 1.0 ml/min for adsor
ption of Y-87. Nonradioactive Sr was unadsorbed and washed out from the col
umn. Above 90% of the available Sr-87m With a Y-87 breakthrough less than 1
0(-3)% could be obtained with 10 mi of 0.9% saline solution per elution fro
m the generator system. The chemical contaminants of Fe and Sr in the eluat
es were found below 0.04 and 0.1 ppm, respectively.
