Needle-plane electrode systems of various shapes are considered, both in ai
r and in the presence of space-charge effects. A two-step conformal-mapping
finite-difference procedure is used in order to compute the field behavior
s and the maximum electric stress. Data are discussed with reference to res
ults presented in the literature, already derived by means of finite-elemen
t and boundary-element methods. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
