The C-15,C-17,C-19 neutron-rich isotopes are investigated with the Generato
r Coordinate Method, involving C-14,C-16,C-18 + n configurations. Core exci
tations are taken into account and are shown to play an important role for
several states. The C-15 nucleus is used as a test case. Analysis of spectr
oscopic properties provides a 1/2(+) assignment for the C-19 ground state.
For C-17, both 1/2(+) and 3/2(+) spins are possible. The theoretical C-19 C
oulomb photodissociation cross section is in good agreement with experiment
. We suggest that a similar experiment with C-17 would provide valuable inf
ormation about the spin. An exploratory study of C-21 shows that this nucle
us could be particle stable with a spin 1/2(+). (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B
