The differential np scattering cross section has been measured at 96 MeV an
d 162 MeV at backward angles at the neutron beam facility of the The Svedbe
rg Laboratory in Uppsala. The angular distributions have been normalized to
the experimental total np cross section. Between 150 degrees and 180 degre
es, the angular distributions are steeper than for most previous measuremen
ts and nucleon-nucleon potential predictions, but for all the angular range
covered, the data agree very well in shape with the recent PSI data. At 18
0 degrees, the difference versus older data amounts to about 10%, implying
serious consequences because of the fundamental importance of this cross se
ction. Values of the charged pi NN coupling constant have been extracted fr
om the data.
