Viral origin: DNA sequences related to herpes gamma virus have been ob
served in Kaposi disease lesions in HIV-positive patients independent
of their sex, age or geographical origin. This novel viral agent has b
een named KSHV (Kaposi sarcoma associated herpes virus) or more approp
riately HHVI (human herpes virus type 8). HHV8-associated diseases: In
addition to Kaposi disease, HHVB has been found in association with o
ther diseases such as B-cell serous tissue lymphomas in HIV+ and HIV-
subjects and Castleman's disease, pseudolymphoma epidemiologically ass
ociated with development of Kaposi disease. Perspectives: Certain anti
viral treatments have been proposed. Animal models will beuseful for a
n experimental verification of the possible oncogenic potiential of HH
V8.
