New bench scale measurements of gas-side pressure drop have been carried ou
t using absorption columns equipped with two different packings: convention
al Raschig rings, and a structured packing of Mellapak 750Y type. The press
ure drop per unit hight, at the same loading, was about twenty folds smalle
r in the structured packing. The data have been further correlated on the b
asis of a new fluid-dynamics model, valid far any type of packing. It has b
een found that the "packing constant" (K-p) was not dependent only on the t
exture of the packing. It linearly increased with the liquid load.
