Abstract
Addition of nucleophiles including heterocycles and precursors of vicinal t ricarbonyls to azetinones generates building blocks incorporating potential electrophilic centers. Oxidation of these products provides reactive carbo nyl units suitably located for reaction with the beta-lactam NH yielding bi cyclic products of biological interest. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd.
