K. Ide et al., UNIFIED NOTATION FOR DATA ASSIMILATION - OPERATIONAL, SEQUENTIAL AND VARIATIONAL, Journal of the Meteorological Society of Japan, 75(1B), 1997, pp. 181-189
The need for unified notation in atmospheric and oceanic data assimila
tion arises from the held's rapid theoretical expansion and the desire
to translate it into practical applications. Self-consistent notation
is proposed that bridges sequential and variational methods, on the o
ne hand, and operational usage, on the other. Over various other motto
es for this risky endeavor, the authors selected: ''When I use a word,
'' Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful voice tone, ''it means jus
t what I choose it to mean - neither more nor less. '' Lewis CarrolI,
1871.
