Introduction: Ureteroceles occur in an orthotopic or ectopic position and m
ay cause recurrent pain and urinary tract infections. The more common ectop
ic ureteroceles are often associated with a duplicated collecting system. T
herapeutic options include endoscopic and open operative techniques.
Case Report: The case of a 65-year-old woman with a stone-bearing ureteroce
le and bilateral duplicated collecting system is presented. The patient com
plained about recurrent urinary tract infections and pain in the lower abdo
minal quadrant. After transurethral incision of the ostium the ureterocele
was inspected and 185 stones removed. During a follow-up of 14 month no uri
nary tract infection occurred. An intravenous urogram demonstrated no stone
residuals and a high-pressure cystogram revealed a 1 degrees vesicouretera
l reflux. A scintigram showed a split renal function of 38% for the left ki
dney (28% for the upper part and 72% for the lower part).
Conclusions: We believe that endoscopic therapy is a relevant therapeutic o
ption for patients with stone-bearing ureteroceles.
