A liquid micromodification of the DNA-repair test with the wild repair prof
icient and three repair-deficient strains of Escherichia coil was used for
determination of the genotoxic effect of 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde (v
anillin) and other phenolic compounds. The negative results obtained were c
onfirmed by the assessment of the number of revertants via the Ames test. T
he ability of 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde (vanillin) and 2-hydroxy-3-me
thoxybenzaldehyde (o-vanillin) to increase the viability of cells and to de
crease the number of mutations in bacteria pre-treated with 4-nitrochinolin
-1-oxide was verified.
