A nuclear demagnetization refrigerator with diffusion-welded copper nu
clear stage has been constructed and successfully operated. The stage
consists of 80 mol of copper and is capable, starting from an initial
magnetic field of 6.4 T, of cooling the superfluid He-3-B down to temp
eratures of similar to 280 mu K in a single-walled experimental cell.
The apparatus is currently used to study the magnetic relaxation proce
sses in superfluid He-3. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
