A methodology for computer aided design and analysis of separation processe
s involving electrolyte systems is presented. The methodology consists of t
hree main parts. The thermodynamic part 'creates' the problem specific prop
erty model package, which is a collection of pure component and mixture pro
perty models. The design and analysis part generates process (flowsheet) al
ternatives, evaluates/analyses feasibility of separation and provides a vis
ual operation path for the desired separation. The simulation part consists
of a simulation/calculation engine that allows the screening and validatio
n of process alternatives. For the simulation part, a general multi-purpose
, multi-phase separation model has been developed and integrated to an exis
ting computer aided system. Application of the design and analysis methodol
ogy is highlighted through two illustrative case studies, (C) 2000 Elsevier
