Abstract
It is examined how the responses to directional template matching masks can bi:interpolated to give optimum signals. Formulae are derived which cover the cases of '1-vector' and '2-vector' features, typified respectively by e dge and line segments. 'm-vectors' with m > 2 are likely to be rare, and it appears that corners and most other features should be classed as I-vector s. These considerations mean that the solutions arrived at for I-vectors an d 2-vectors will solve the foreseeable problems of signal interpolation bet ween mask responses. Thus a useful non-arbitrary solution has been found fo r determining how to calculate combined responses for n-mask operators.
