A new class of polycarbosilane derivatives was synthesized in good yields t
hrough the coupling reaction of dichlorodihydrodisilaanthracene with chloro
silanes using sodium dispersion. The dihydroanthracene derivative was obtai
ned fi om the organodimetallic anthracene coupling reaction with methyl(H)-
, methylphenyl- and dimethylchlorosilanes. This process has two main stages
determined from the content of the sodium derivative in the reaction mixtu
re, high molecular weight products being formed even at room temperature. T
he intermediates which contained Si-H groups lead finally to functional pol
ysiladihydroanthracenes. The structure of the resulting polymers was invest
igated using IR, H-1-NMR, C-13-NMR and SEC analyses. (C) 2000 Elsevier Scie
