Abstract
Deletion of the 1,3-beta-D-glucan synthase gene FKS1 in Saccharomyces cerev isiae induces a compensatory mechanism that is reflected in a significant i ncrease in chitin synthase III (CSIII) activity, leading to high rates of c hitin synthesis. Deregulation of CSIII activity is mainly due to the intrac ellular delocalization of Chs3p and Chs4p, the two main components of the C SIII active complex.
