Daily smoke concentrations obtained by the Athens air pollution monitoring
network for a fifteen-year period started in 1984 were analysed. The analys
is showed decreasing trends at all monitoring stations during this period.
The seasonal variation of smoke concentrations presents a maximum during th
e cold period of the year and a minimum during the warm period. Maximum smo
ke concentrations are observed at central-city residential stations (downto
wn Athens and Piraeus) during the cold period of the year, while at station
s located in industrial areas the seasonal variation has a very small ampli
tude.
