Abstract
A new procedure for implementing the stiffness derivative method for evalua ting stress intensity factor is proposed. Unlike the original approach, the proposed method involves the nodal displacements and strain energies of th e crack-tip elements only. The undesirable need to extract element stiffnes s matrices in the original approach is removed. The proposed approach can b e easily implemented using commercial finite element packages.
