Oxidation of hydrogen in cell extract of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans s
train 2198 in the presence of benzyl viologen was studied. At least tw
o enzymes catalyzing hydrogen oxidation with different substrate affin
ities are found in the extract. Increasing the substrate concentration
above a threshold value inhibits both enzymes. The influence of some
physicochemical factors on the rate of hydrogen oxidation was studied.
Some suggestions about the composition of the catalytic sites are mad
e, and a reaction scheme is proposed.
