Diaquasuccinatocadmium(II) has been studied by single-crystal X-ray diffrac
tion and FTIR and Raman spectroscopies at room temperature, The structure c
onsists of seven-coordinated Cd atoms bridged by succinate ions to form two
-dimensional polymers perpendicular to the b axis. Hydrogen bonds embracing
one of the coordination water molecule and a carboxylate residue stabilize
the three-dimensional structure, The spectroscopic data are consistent wit
h the structural model. Thermal dehydration and decomposition processes hav
e been also investigated using TC-DTA measurements, FTIR spectroscopy, and
powder Xray diffraction analysis. A phase transition of the amorphous anhyd
rous compound to a stable crystalline phase was observed at 262 degrees C.
