Formation of the homologous series of layered compounds nBi(2) . mBi(2)Te(3
) and nGeTe . mBi(2)Te(3) is analyzed. For both series, the crystal structu
re contains two-layer (Bi-2 or GeTe) and five-layer (Bi2Te3) packets perpen
dicular to the c axis. Unlike the Bi-2 packers, the GeTe packets do not ret
ain their individually during crystal structure formation; they are linked
to the Bi2Te3 five-layer packets to form new multilayer packets leading to
a considerable change in the character of interatomic interactions.
