The talk summarizes the results of the research on the crown ether chemistr
y in three main areas:
1. The effects of chiral crown ethers on the enantioselective C-C and C-H b
ond formations have been studied in two types of the Michael addition as we
ll as in a Darzens condensation. Good enantioselectivity with high enantiom
er excess can be observed in the presence of catalytic amount chiral crown
ether and solid KOtBu under solid liquid phase transfer conditions.
2. New crown ether based ion selective ligands have been developed for ion
selective electrodes, like K(+), Zn(2+), Ca(2+) and Cs(+). The potassium se
lective electrode so obtained proved to be the best and a Japanese firm pro
duces and sells it all over the world.
3. To change the pharmacokinetic parameters of salt like pharmacons several
representatives of a new type of cyclodextrin-crown ether combinations has
been synthesized and studied by ORD, NMR and by ion selective electrodes.
