Abstract
Type 2 diabetes is one of the main health problems in Mexico. This disorder is the most frequent cause of premature incapacity and the third cause of death in adults older than. 40 years. The main objective of the treatment o f the disease is to delay or prevent the appearance of the diabetes related chronic complications. The proper diagnosis, the correction of hyperglycem ia and other coronary risk factors have proved to be useful therapies for t he prevention of some of the complications. However, in many cases, many ye ars past before the diagnosis is done and the therapeutic goals are not ach ieved. Some of the insufficiencies of the treatment could be corrected by m edical education, for the primary physicians and the patients. The problem is complex; the large amount of data on this field make the proper analysis of the information a difficult task for the general practitioner. The obje ctive of this publication is to resume the basic information for the primar y physician needed to the prevention and treatment of diabetes related chro nic complications. Here it is presented an actualized and evidence based vi sion of the treatment. The recommendations could be implemented in a primar y attention setting. This is not an exhaustive review of the diabetes treat ment; our purpose was to produce a comprehensive review for the general pra ctitioner. This publication is a joint effort of the three Mexican Societie s for the divulge the basic principles of the diabetes treatment among the general practitioners for improving the attention of these patients.
