L. Vaillancourt, The concept of "stewardship" according to Douglas J. Hall as a foundation for a Christ-centered ecological theology, STUD RELIG, 29(1), 2000, pp. 35-53
In the context of today's ecological crisis, the theme of stewardship, ever
more present in theological-ecological literature, can be a key in identif
ying a specific contribution of Christian discourse: to rethink the anthrop
ological-cosmological imagery of our occidental culture. A Canadian theolog
ian, Douglas J. Hall, has deeply explored this new image of the human being
understood as a "steward", a forgotten treasure of the Judeo-Christian tra
dition. The study of the concept of "stewardship" in Hall's work, as well a
s the right notions offered by Jewish, Orthodox and Amerindian traditions,
confirm the pivotal value of this concept in ecological theology. In closin
g, our article leads up to a christological interpretation of stewardship w
hich reinforces the power of this biblical symbol.
