A new strain scanner has been built at the ISIS facility which has bee
n specially designed for engineering measurements. The instrument uses
large radial collimators to define a small measuring gauge volume. Su
ch collimators enable large detector arrays to be employed, thus reduc
ing measuring times. The technique of time-of-flight strain-scanning h
as been developed using this instrument, and examples of the type of m
easurements that may be made are illustrated. The current performance
parameters of the instrument are outlined together with possible futur
e improvements in both the spatial resolution and measuring times.
