Abstract
The authors calculate the probability density function of the Q factor for optically amplified transmission IM-DD systems, in the presence of a random icity given by the polarisation mode dispersion. Theoretical and experiment al results obtained in a soliton field trial 500km long at 40Gbit/s show a satisfactory agreement.
