A novel active filter circuit configuration, including its control algorith
m, suitable for power applications is presented which provides an alternati
ve approach to that presently employed. The configuration uses current or v
oltage source inverter circuits. The main advantages of the proposed circui
t are that both the sizes of the capacitors and the switching frequencies a
re much lower than those in the inverter based filters. Consequently, the s
ystem and switching losses are considerably reduced. Moreover, switching de
vices can withstand higher values of currents at lower frequencies as compa
red with higher frequency inverter circuits. The theoretical basis for the
linear voltage controller, which is used in this work, is fully developed a
nd simulation and experimental results are included.
