Cy. Tai, CRYSTALLIZATION KINETICS REVEALED FROM EXPERIMENTAL-DATA ANALYZED BY THE 2-STEP GROWTH-MODEL, Journal of Chemical Engineering of Japan, 30(3), 1997, pp. 373-381
The two-step crystal growth model has been employed to analyze the cry
stal growth rate data and much useful kinetic information is revealed.
This report summarizes the important findings existing in the literat
ure. Firstly, experimental methods are suggested to determine the para
meters in the two-step model and the factors which influence the mass-
transfer and surface-reaction coefficients are identified. Then the co
ntrolling step of a crystal growth process is judged from the effectiv
eness factor. Finally, the secondary nucleation rate data are correlat
ed with the interfacial supersaturation, which is a variable appearing
in the two-step model. Therefore, the crystal growth rate and seconda
ry nucleation rate are closely related. As a conclusion, crystal growt
h and secondary nucleation may be considered as coupled phenomenon.
