Using time-lapse video microscopy, we have followed the process of neuronal
death in an intact region of the mammalian nervous system. We show here th
e fast dynamics of nuclear fragmentation, which is over in <1 hr for neuron
s undergoing apoptosis in the living rat retina. Nuclear fragmentation is a
ccompanied by a progressive raise of intracellular calcium and followed by
erratic movement of the apoptotic cells, documenting their loss of adhesion
