Two simple one-dimensional cobalt phosphates containing linear chains of co
rner-shared 4-membered rings have been synthesized hydrothermally by the re
action between amine phosphates and cobalt(II) ions under non-aqueous condi
tions. The linear chains are held together by hydrogen bond interactions in
volving the hydrogens of the amine and the framework oxygens. The two cobal
t phosphates reported are the first linear chain compounds discovered in th
e family of open-framework transition metal phosphates.
