A new layered aluminophosphate has been synthesized hydrothermally in the p
resence of 1,3-diaminopropane and its structure solved from X-ray powder di
ffraction data. The compound with the composition [C3H12N2](0.5)[AlPO4(OH)(
H2O)]. H2O crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma (No. 62) with
a=6.91848(11), b=22.2989(4) and c=9.6074(2) Angstrom. The layers contain on
ly 6-co-ordinated aluminium forming [-Al-(OH)-Al-] chains, and these are co
nnected to one another via phosphorus tetrahedra. The structure of the laye
rs is closely related to that of the layered aluminium methylphosphonate Al
MepO-zeta. This compound represents the third example of layered aluminopho
sphates with an atomic ratio P:Al=1:1. Its thermal decomposition has been m
onitored by X-ray diffraction and solid state NMR.
