Abstract
Formation of an anomalous 3-nitrothiophene product, encountered during the preparation of potential bioreductive anti-cancer agents, is rationalised i n terms of a hydrogen atom transfer mechanism which also accounts for the u nexpected formation of previously described 5,5'-biimidazoles.
