Abstract
The generation and accumulation of genetic mutations have been associated w ith carcinogenesis. Epidemiological and experimental evidence implicate par voviruses in growth inhibition (oncosuppression) and selective destruction (oncolysis) of tumor cells. It is proposed here that parvoviruses can prefe rentially target genetically unstable tumor cells, which are deficient in D NA repair mechanisms. This selective strategy may serve as a virus-based th erapeutic approach against cancer. (C) 2000 Harcourt Publishers Ltd.
