Di(4-formyl-2-methoxyphenyl)phosphates (DFMPP) were synthesized by the cond
ensation of vanillin with phosphoryldichlorides. The di(4-hydroxymethyl-2-m
ethoxyphenyl)phosphates (DHMPP) were prepared by the reduction of DFMPP wit
h potassium borohydride. The (31)p-H-1 coupling in DFMPP (compounds 1a-h) w
as investigated and the splitting of the P-31 signal by the H-1 nuclei was
observed only with the alkyl DFMPP (1a-e). In the non-decoupled P-31 spectr
a a quarter at -11.3 ppm was seen for 1a (P-OCH3) with J(PH)= 11.4 Hz, and
a triplet for 1b, 1c, 1d and 1e respectively (1b, P-OCH2CH3, delta = - 12.3
ppm, J(PH)=84 HZ; 1C, P-OCH2CH2CH3, delta = - 12.6 ppm, J(PH)=7.1 Hz; 1d,
P-OC2CH2CH2CH3, delta = - 12.9 ppm, J(PH)=8.4 Hz and 1e, P-OCH2CH2Cl, delta
= - 13.0 ppm, J(PH)=8.1Hz).
