We present an elementary derivation of the maximum fidelity attainable in t
eleportation using a single copy of two d-level systems in an arbitrary pur
e state. This derivation provides a complete set of necessary and sufficien
t conditions for optimal teleportation protocols. We also discuss the infor
mation on the teleported particle that is revealed in course of the protoco
l using a nonmaximally entangled state.
