F. Resta et al., Switch therapy to nevirapine for protease inhibitor in HIV-1 positive patients with undetectable plasma viral load, SEVENTH EUROPEAN CONFERENCE ON CLINICAL ASPECTS AND TREATMENT OF HIV-INFECTION, 1999, pp. 111-113
Protease Inhibitors (PI) are frequently associated with side effects, poor
adherence and long term toxcities. Therefore there is a need for long term.
simple and well-tolerated regimen, wich will maintain virological suppress
ion below the level of detection such as the nevirapine. So 15 patients wit
h undetectable plasma viral load on PI therapy were switched to nevirapine
regimen because there was intolerance to IF. One patient interrupted nevira
pine for intolerance. Six patients had a viral load detectable after 3 mont
hs post-switch, while 8 patients continued to maintain undetectable plasma
viral load. Our study suggests that randomised studies comparing NNRTI swit
ch versus maintenance of initial PI containing regimen are urgenttly requir
ed to verify whether this type strategy is able.
