Abstract
A clonal culture of Alexandrium andersoni, obtained from germination of a r esting cyst, collected From the Gulf of Naples, was found positive for PSP toxicity by mouse bioassay. The toxicity profile of this dinoflagellate con sists mainly of toxins belonging to the saxitoxin class, in particular of S axitoxin (STX) and Neosaxitoxin (NEO), as determined by a wide MS and H-1 N MR analysis. This represents the first report of the presence of A, anderso ni in the Mediterranean Sea, as well as of its toxicity. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
