A method is presented for quantifying information obtained from the indicat
ions of a Compton scattering nondestructive testing technique. This is achi
eved by formulating a measurement model, which provides a numerical estimat
e of the detector response for a given anomaly. Using the measured response
function, the location of an anomaly, its size and density are obtained wi
th the aid of the model. The process is demonstrated by quantifying indicat
ions obtained from experimental measurements for flaws artificially created
in an aluminum block. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
