Whereas metallic elements with the fee, hcp and bce structures have no Rama
n-active vibrations, solid gallium is found to have one Raman band at 246 c
m(-1). This band is not observed for molten gallium, and it is attributed t
o the symmetric stretching vibration of the two Ga, units in the primitive
unit cell. Since solid gallium has Raman-active vibrational modes and has a
lready been reported to exhibit SERS, it should also exhibit plasma resonan
ce enhancement of the Raman scattering by the metal itself, a phenomenon wh
ich has not yet been observed experimentally. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V
