This review focuses on certain of the principles involved in high-dose chem
otherapy and radiation therapy along with autologous hematopoietic stem cel
l transplantation for the treatment of certain malignancies. In addition, t
he evidence, wherever possible based on randomized data, for the applicatio
n of this approach in certain malignancies is reviewed. The malignancies hi
ghlighted include acute myeloid leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, non
-Hodgkin lymphoma, Hodgkin disease, and breast cancer. (C) 2000 American As
