This paper offers a brief overview of the study of German in France from it
s beginnings in the early 16th century to the establishment of German studi
es at the postsecondary level, in the second half of the 19th century. It a
ttempts to investigate to what extent various stereotypes and preconceived
notions have influenced the way in which German was perceived in France. Th
e process of institutionalising the teaching of German in France is shown t
o have been a lengthy and difficult one.
