Abstract
A new molecular model for activated carbons is presented, which consis ts of a collection of randomly oriented carbon crystallites. The carbo n displays energetic heterogeneity as a result of its complex microstr ucture and surface polarity. Adsorption isotherms and isosteric heats of adsorption for methane, ethane and their binary mixtures were estim ated by grand-canonical Monte Carlo simulations. Simulations of the ad sorption of water vapor were performed to adjust the surface polarity of the adsorbent.
