Abstract
A method of lowering the temperature of neutral atoms is considered. The me thod is based on gaining information on the translational state of individu al atoms and the use of this information for the separation of slow and fas t atoms. The lowest attainable temperature of an atomic ensemble is appreci ably lower than the atomic recoil energy. (C) 2000 MAIK "Nauka / Interperio dica".
